NAIROBI， Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's once-mighty football side the AFC Leopards' probably wish to quickly forget its 2016 Kenya Premier League season. The Leopards' campaign went horribly awry， despite some important changes to the team and a sponsorship windfall from a local sports-betting firm.
Once a force to be reckoned with in regional football， the AFC Leopards became whipping boys during 2016， ending the season in 12th position， only two places away from relegation.
The AFC Leopards' standing as one of the most successful clubs in the East and Central African region is underlined by the fact that it has won the Kenyan Premier League a record 13 times， and the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) Club Championships five times.
The myriad reasons for this season's lackluster showing all center around developments off the pitch.
The Leopards started the year off on the wrong footing， when rival factions fighting to control the club entered two different sponsorship deals with competing betting firms that forced the Sports Disputes Tribunal to arbitrate the stalemate.
But what was seen as a good sign， especially after the 450，000 U.S.-dollar annual sponsorship package from Sportpesa， quickly devolved into leadership wrangles that saw an interim committee constituted by the Sports Disputes Tribunal take control of the club's affairs for a period of six months.
The club acquired the services of Belgian Ivan Minnaet as head coach in March， only to record a losing streak before being sacked six months into his contract.
It was during this shaky period that the Leopards' form dipped， important points were dropped， and the rain started to on beat them as club leaders crisscrossed the country campaigning and positioning themselves for elections.
A new office under the chairmanship of Dan Mule was elected on July 24， during which Felix Shitsama was elected vice chairman; Oscar Igaida as secretary general; Oliver Imbenzi treasurer assisted by Justus Makabila; while Elijah Stazo was elected assistant secretary general.
The team tried in vain to control an already sinking ship， bringing on board a new patron and board of trustees.
Former lawmaker Cyrus Jirongo was replaced as club patron by Dr. Francis Inganji， an international management and economic consultant.
Former civic leader Linnet Merihane was appointed as a trustee， pending the appointment of two more trustees at the end of the season.
The new trustees (set to replace lawmaker Timothy Wanyonyi and other politicians) were strategically picked to separate club affairs from politics. However， the move never translated into results.
As the team continued to lose matches， the new office bearers unveiled an ambitious plan to realize their ambition of making the club great once again， purchasing land to construct a state-of-the-art stadium， training ground， club house， secretariat and sports academy for the team all budgeted at 2 million dollars.
Inganji donated 50，000 U.S. dollars to kick start the process， claiming that he wanted to engage the team in long-term sustainable projects able to generate income "so that the culture of seeking handouts to survive becomes a thing of the past for the club."
With a bad season behind them， the Leopards， who towards the end of the season sacked six players from its first team， must now go back to the drawing board to build a new side for the 2017 season.
However， with their poor performance having cost them the opportunity to play in continental competitions as well local competitions for leading clubs， recruiting top-class players will likely pose a serious challenge. Time will tell if the Leopards can pick themselves up from such a disappointing showing.
