The 44GS collection is one of the most important watches ever made by Grand Seiko. As already explained in previous articles, Grand Seiko spent seven years integrating the design codes that define the brand's identity, a set of stylistic requirements that allow it to sail intact over the decades. The watch that established the "Grand Seiko Style" was the 1967 44GS. Turning 55 this year is the perfect time for the brand to celebrate its stunningly sharp looks. Designed to express Japan's unique philosophy of aesthetics, there are strict regulations on proportions, finishes and angles, and are still the design principles of Grand Seiko to this day. The inspiration behind this new Heritage 44GS Spring Drive, which also gave the model a nickname, was Asaborake, or "the moment when dawn lifts the veil of night". Now let's talk about watches in more pragmatic language. This SBGY011 is a slim, elegant representation of the 44GS design, with a relatively compact case size of 40mm in diameter and 10.5mm in height (thin by GS standards...) watchmaker, also fairly controlled, just over the 46 mm. The shape of the case couldn't be more appropriate for a GS watch, combining sharp angles, a flat Zaratsu-polished finish on the (solid) shoulders, thin brushed trim on the sides and inner facets of the lugs, and virtually no bezels. The crown is slightly recessed for comfort, and despite its slim and elegant appearance, this watch is 100m water resistant for ease of use.
Underneath the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface is a new dial, known for its delicate texture. This Asaborake pattern is reminiscent of the texture used on the European versions of the Elegance SBGW267 and SBGW269, but with a different leaning. The rest of the dial is ultra-classic and minimal. The SBGY011 is a dateless, time-only watch featuring the brand's beautifully faceted and polished hands and markers. Underneath the see-through caseback is a very refined movement, the slender hand-wound calibre 9R31. Manufactured in-house at Shinshu Watch Studios, it relies on the brand's proprietary Spring Drive technology, which combines the beauty of a mechanical movement with the precision of quartz regulation (marked by a claimed accuracy of ±15 seconds per month or ±1 second per day) . This in-house movement has the same double mainspring structure as the 9R02 movement, but does not use a torque return system. This results in a slightly lower but still adequate power reserve at 72 hours. The remaining battery indicator is located on the side of the movement to keep the dial as clean as possible. The finish, though slightly understated, is top-notch, with blue screws and finely brushed bridges that contrast with the highly polished sink and bevel.
